So, I’m back and not dead, I promise. Sorry for being so lame and not posting in so long, but I’ve been pretty busy. I moved this summer and I started going back to college, so I haven’t had a ton of down time. But things are starting to normalize again, so I’ll be working on Pokedex of the Gods, and getting back into doing illustration and design work.
I’m pretty excited to show off this new piece, even though I haven’t got around to coloring it. It’s the first finished pokemon-type-deity and it’s chock full of references. The Starswarm Sovereign is the bug type deity, and I made sure to include every Gen1 bug type pokemon.
The Starswarm are kind of your run of the mill hive mind, alien insect plague. Most of the natives of Urth view the arrival of the Starswarm as a terrible omen. They are seen as Destroyers from the Sky and Bringers of Famine. However, they are worshiped by newly formed cults of the meek and oppressed, who view them as Great Equalizers. Because the mere presence of a Starswarm bug is enough to leave an individual handicapped- sharp minded scholars and priests are left in a stupor, and the muscles of thugs and bullies become feeble.
Rather than being delivered to Urth by a Visitor like the other types, the collective mind of the Starswarm chooses a champion upon arrival. The whole process is pretty unpleasant, because in this case the nature deity isn’t willing to be their host, and Starswarm bugs crawl up inside of him and wear him around like a suit. The illustration shows the sort-of-half-in-control Starswarm Sovereign fighting to regain his wits while the bugs use his body to spawn more members. The other Starswarm bugs are swarming around, destroying the remnants of the nature deity’s temple, killing his followers, that sort of stuff, y’know? And finally, at the bottom lies another lesser nature deity/spirit/whatever that fell victim to Ol’ Swarmy.
ps. I promise I’ll get around to answering all the messages I neglected.
